Cholesterol test - Total, HDL and LDL cholesterol

Health Check Shop Expert Review

A high cholesterol level is a risk factor for hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), stroke and heart disease. Our cholesterol test gives you a reliable estimate of whether your overall cholesterol level, HDL (good cholesterol) and LDL (bad cholesterol) are within normal limits.

How does the test work?

Prick your finger quickly and easily with the sterile finger pricker supplied to obtain a drop of blood. Place the drop of blood on the test strip and wait for three minutes. Match the colour on the test strip with the disc and read off your cholesterol total, LDL and HDL cholesterol levels.

How does our test compare with a test from your doctor?

Until recently, having a cholesterol test meant that you had a measurement made of the ‘total’ amount of cholesterol ignoring the fact that the total amount is made up of both good and bad cholesterol. Whether you need to change your diet or exercise regime will depend on the levels of the different types of cholesterol which is why our test gives you a measurement of good (HDL), bad (LDL) and total cholesterol levels.

What does the result mean?

An overall cholesterol level of up to 200 mg/dl (5.2 mmol/l) is the normal level for adults. If your total cholesterol level reading is higher, or the LDL level is high and HDL low then you should make an appointment to visit your doctor or practice nurse.

If the cholesterol level in the blood remains persistently high, deposits on the walls of the blood vessels cause atherosclerosis. This disease develops unnoticed over decades. However, it can be detected and treated in time if diagnosed at an early check-up.

Foods with high fat and cholesterol content, a hypoactive thyroid, badly managed diabetes, chronic liver disease or long-term use of various medication such as the contraceptive pill or diuretics can lead to increased cholesterol levels.

Monitoring your cholesterol levels

Monitoring the ratio of HDL and LDL cholesterol levels can help show the beneficial effects of a low fat diet. We will provide you with a voucher with your first order which will give you a 10% discount on all further orders.
