Around 1 in 10 people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms could actually have coeliac disease  - a specific type of autoimmune response to gluten found in wheat, barley and rye often confused with gluten intolerance. Once diagnosed, coeliac disease is treated with a strict gluten free diet and most people regain their health and vitality within weeks after years of suffering.

How accurate is the test?

A report in the British Medical Journal  which studied 2690 children and 120 adults showed that the this test for coeliac disease was as accurate as hospital laboratory tests (Korponay-Szabo et al. BMJ 2007;335;1244-1247).

Why an early diagnosis is essential

The importance of an early diagnosis of coeliac disease cannot be over-stressed.  Left undiagnosed and untreated, coeliac disease carries a higher risk of developing osteoporosis, infertility and bowel cancer later on in life.

What is gluten?

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye - some people are also sensitive to oats but the good news is that once you have been diagnosed you can lead a healthy, normal life by avoiding gluten in your diet and there is a lot of support available from organisations such as Coeliac UK.

How does the test work?

The coeliac test detects high levels of IgA anti-transglutaminase antibodies (tTG) from a finger prick blood spot. This is an established blood test for coeliac disease which has also been shown to give comparable results to intestinal biopsy and uses exactly the same materials found in tests used by doctors and laboratories. Tests that detect IgA type antibodies are more specific than those that detect IgG type antibodies.

"This test is quite valid - the gold standard for 99 per cent of coeliac patients is the presence of these antibodies," says Tom MacDonald, professor of immunology at Bart's and the London University medical schools. "The test is useful because GPs sometimes fail to diagnose coeliac properly and the longer it is left untreated the worse it gets - leading to complications such as anaemia. If you suspect a problem this is a good way to test yourself, though see your GP to confirm it. "Coeliac disease is a condition which can be cured with a gluten-free diet, so a person with a positive result can then take immediate action."
