Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

There are many  triggers of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and it is often difficult to pin-point the actual cause. In some people, symptoms may be triggered by a food sensitivity. Two of the most common food triggers are gluten found in wheat, barley and rye or lactose found in dairy products.

How does the test work?

The investigation comprises of two separate procedures as an aid to the diagnosis of lactose intolerance and coeliac disease respectively. Both of these conditions can trigger symptoms that can easily be confused with irritable bowel syndrome. Most people will have a result within 15 minutes.

Common symptoms of coeliac disease and lactose intolerance

• Flatulence (wind)
• Diarrhoea
• Bloated stomach
• Stomach pains
• Stomach rumbling
• Nausea
• Stomach cramps

What do the results mean?

Once you have a diagnosis of coeliac disease or lactose intolerance, avoiding the trigger of your symptoms can help restore your health to normal within weeks. Both the coeliac test and the lactose intolerance test are based on established scientific procedures and are as reliable as hospital laboratory tests performed by your doctor.
