Meningitis Early Alert Pack

Health Check Shop Expert Review

The Arc Meningitis Early Alert Pack helps you identify whether a rash and other symptoms are indicators of meningitis and septicaemia.

Meningitis and septicaemia claims around 4000 victims every year, most are small children. One in ten will die. A further two in ten children will suffer from severe and permanent disability. Previously, parents have had to rely on the "tumbler test" or glass test. Whilst this is a simple way to detect the meningitis rash, many parents  are not aware that this rash may appear later on during the disease and sometimes not at all. Recognising the symptoms quickly and taking appropriate action saves lives.

How does the test work?

The Arc was invented by family doctors and patented on behalf of NHS Scotland. The pack contains all you need to help you to recognise the early signs of meningitis and septicaemia.

Press the 'Arc' firmly against an area of skin that has a rash - a rash that remains visible under pressure is an indicator of meningococcal septicaemia and is a medical emergency.

The appearance of meningococcal rash can vary from person to person - make sure you know all the symptoms. Images provided courtesy of the Meningitis Trust

What do the results mean?

The 'Arc' is unique in that it also has an image of the meningitis rash printed directly onto the device for easy reference together with the signs and symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia in babies, children and adults. All the information you need - all in one place.

What the doctors say

Doctors stress that the meningitis rash identified by the conventional glass tumbler test may appear late during the course of the disease or sometimes not at all. It is essential that parents remain vigilant for ALL the signs and symptoms of meningitis and not just rely on whether there is a rash.

Dr Ravi Jayaram, Paediatric Consultant from the Countess of Chester Hospital, said, “I think that the Meningitis Arc is a very useful tool for anyone concerned about the onset of meningitis and particularly for parents of unwell children.

“The “tumbler test” to assess for the rash associated with meningococcal septicaemia is fairly well known but can be falsely reassuring as a non-blanching rash may not always be present. The Arc has the advantage of listing many of the other “alarm bells” suggestive of meningitis which is incredibly important, particularly as some studies have suggested that up to half of parents couldn’t remember three features of meningitis.

“In meningitis, early diagnosis and treatment is crucial and I welcome anything that encourages recognition of all the many other signs and symptoms. The Arc has the potential to be a simple but effective aid for prompt recognition of the condition."

Dr Chris Steele,  ITVs This Morning "This makes for a powerful diagnostic aid that can be kept in the bathroom cabinet and accessed whenever needed by all the family".

Dr Rosemary Leonard,  Doctor Doctor and BBC Breakfast  "...  the Arc can help identify meningitis"

Dr Peter Saul,  Consultant Paediatrician and General Practitioner "...is a very positive step forward in educating people about the disease and raising awareness of what to look out for.... it is a natural addition to any household's medicine cabinet"

Health professionals and schools

It is sometimes difficult for health professionals to confidently distinguish between cold/flu symptoms and the early stages of meningitis. The Arc serves as a very simple but effective reminder of the key meningitis and septicaemia symptoms to look out for in babies, children and adults. Enquiries from doctors, nurses and other health professionals should be made directly by telephone to JRBiomedical on 01492 510 329.

Many primary schools throughout the UK have already purchased the Arc for their first aid box. Discounts are available for bulk orders, please contact us for details.
