Prostate cancer test (PSA test)

Prostate cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in men in the UK.

Over 30,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK every year, with a third dying from the disease, the average age at diagnosis being 70 to 74 years. Over 90% of prostate cancer deaths occur in men over 65 years old and 80% of men will have some cancer cells in their prostate by the age of 80.

A family history of prostate cancer can increase your risk by a factor of 2.5 to 3.4 times.

What is Prostate specific antigen (PSA)?

Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by the prostate gland in men.In prostate disease the PSA escapes from the confines of the prostate gland and enters the blood stream. The level of PSA in the blood is the best method currently available for detecting localised prostate cancer. However, PSA levels in the blood can sometimes be moderately elevated for reasons other than cancer and using a single cut-off value of around 4ng/ml for positive or negative can lead to the risk of unnecessary investigations and worry. You should therefore think carefully and consider your reasons before having a test for PSA (Prostate Cancer Risk Management, 2009 Cancer Research UK).

To overcome some of these limitations the Health Check Shop PSA test has been specifically designed to show you whether your PSA levels are low and prostate cancer unlikely, in the grey area of 4 to 10ng/ml, or higher than 10ng/ml when prostate cancer is probable. Helping to give you more confidence in the meaning of your test result and peace of mind.

Free retest within 3 months

For Health Check Shop customers that have a negative or borderline result with our PSA test we offer a free retest within three months of your order so that you can see whether your PSA level has increased or remained the same - just contact us by email or phone and quote your invoice number. However, we strongly encourage you to speak with your own doctor who has access to your full medical history if you have symptoms or concerns. As with all diagnostic tests your result should not be interpreted in isolation but considered in relation to your personal clinical history.

PSA test results

The PSA test from Health Check Shop shows whether your PSA level is;

• less than 4ng/ml (prostate cancer unlikely)
• between 4 and 10ng/ml (prostate cancer possible but may be other reasons)
• or higher than 10ng/ml (a high probability of prostate cancer)

In independent laboratory studies our PSA test has been shown to agree with laboratory test results and is CE accredited according to Medical Device Directive 98/79EC for testing at home.

How does the test work?

Unlike other home test kits which usually just tell you if your PSA is positive or negative according to a fixed cut-off our test will tell you if your result falls within three important ranges.

A finger prick blood spot is required and is obtained by using the sterile automatic finger pricker provided with the test kit. The test takes 15 minutes to complete when your result will be displayed on the test cassette as less than 4ng/ml, between 4 and 10ng/ml or greater than 10ng/ml.

What does the result tell me?

The test shows whether your PSA level is in the normal range or high.
